The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York, a nonprofit civil legal services program, is seeking a Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Staff Attorney for the Albany office. Legal Aid's mission is to fight for fairness, dignity, and justice for those living in poverty and for a society that is inclusive and equitable for all. About the Role

The Attorney with provide high-quality, culturally competent, civil legal services to victims of crime, especially domestic violence and/or sexual assault, and to low-income people in Columbia and Greene Counties.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and providing high-quality legal services to clients in civil matters.
  • Sensitive and effective management of a robust litigation caseload involving sensitive and traumatic circumstances.
  • Assertive, compassionate, demonstrate good judgment, be highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to communicate effectively and work efficiently.
  • Prior experience in high-quality representation of victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault in Family Court, or relevant experience.
  • Responsible for providing advice, brief service, community legal education, and zealous representation to crime victims, especially victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault, in a broad range of civil matters, including orders of protection, custody, matrimonial law, and child support.
  • Responsible for implementation, recordkeeping, and reporting for assigned grants.
  • Expected to work closely with the local domestic violence service providers and actively participate in domestic violence task forces.

Skills and Education Requirements


  • JD from an accredited law school.
  • 2-10 Years of legal experience.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and to helping consumers address individual and systemic problems related to economic security and stability by providing high-quality legal services to low-income clients.
  • Ability to identify and address systemic legal problems.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other LASNNY staff.
  • Commitment to professionalism, collegiality, and teamwork.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and project management skills.
  • Ability to handle high-volume caseload and work off-site.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Reliable transportation. Occasional travel required.
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish, preferred.
  • Current NY Bar admission is in good standing.

Work Environment

This position operates in a professional law office environment and occasionally may require the carrying of regular office supplies. This role requires using standard office equipment and software and remote videoconferencing platforms.
